If You Know Where You're Going, It's Hard to Get Lost

At times, I think we’re all afraid of getting lost — physically or emotionally. I know I am. It’s been said that it’s hard to get lost if you know where you’re going, and I agree with that. But what if you don’t know what your destination is?

In those moments, I find it helpful to think less about where I’m going and more about how I want to feel. Most of us know that — how we want to feel — and for me, it’s easier to arrive at a feeling and let the rest unfold than it is to focus on an exact destination.

Years ago, when I first imagined this company, it wasn’t a company at all. It was a collection of feelings. I knew I wanted to feel a sense of belonging, deep love, and an excitement for life. I’ve come to call these my three P’s: purpose, place, and passion. Without identifying those feelings, I’m not sure I ever would have arrived where I am today — which, of course, is not my final destination.

Recently, I was walking with a friend who shared an acronym with me: CUSP. She explained that for a person to feel safe, they need four things — Control, Understanding, Support, and Purpose.

When I feel safe — when I have even a small sense of control, understanding, support, and purpose — I’m able to take chances. Without those things, I tend to play it safe. And playing it safe isn’t when I’m at my best. When I feel grounded and supported, I’m brave. I take risks. I stretch.

The idea of CUSP reminded me of my three P’s. Sometimes we need to hear similar ideas in new ways for them to take root and truly sink in.

With love and light,
